The Final few Holes
by Liz

Whenever I had a good score or was getting close to the end of a matchplay situation, I used to find that I was thinking things like
"just 2 more holes, you can do it!" "come on, last hole, nearly finished ! "
Even worse than this, my mind would start to think about winning and get sidetracked by everything that goes along with winning a match ....and you know what happens then, don't you!!
Invariably, I would then become so tense and wound up that I would more often than not get myself into trouble and 'blow up' on the last couple of holes.
To get myself past this issue I now tell myself that I have another 9 holes to play after this one, this is NOT the last hole, all is NOT depending on how you play the last hole or two as there are still another 9 left to play.
By doing this I am stopping my emotions and nerves from boiling up and affecting my swing at the finishing end of a match or competition! My mind stays focussed because it thinks that there is still a long way to go so no need to get over excited.
This thought has worked for me so many times and continues to do so. I hope it will be a useful thought to share in this Golf Performance Thoughts forum!
